Description Propidium iodide (PI) is a nucleic acid fluorescent dye used for staining mammals, bacteria, and yeast. It does not penetrate the membranes of living cells, but is able to penetrate the cell membranes of dead cells and cells in the middle and late stages of apoptosis and stains the nuclei of cells. Therefore, PI is commonly used as a fluorescent probe for the detection of apoptosis or cell necrosis.
