| Principle | Peptone, peptones provide carbon and nitrogen sources, vitamins and growth factors; bovine bile salts and crystal violet inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria; sodium chloride maintains a balanced osmotic pressure; agar is a coagulant for the medium; lactose is a fermentable sugar; neutral red is a pH indicator; colonies appear pink and a turbid ring of bile salt precipitation appears around the colonies as the bacteria ferment lactose to produce acid. |
