Clostridium butyricum is an anaerobic, endospore-forming, gram-positive bacillus that produces butyric acid. It is a common gut commensal in humans and animals and acts as a probiotic, potentially serving as an alternative to antibiotics for conditions like non-antimicrobial induced diarrhea, antimicrobial-associated diarrhea, constipation, and irritable bowel syndrome. This bacterium ferments undigested dietary carbohydrates to produce short-chain fatty acids, mainly butyrate and acetate. Butyrate provides energy for colonic epithelial cells, maintains gut immune balance, and has anti-inflammatory effects.
