Bioethanol is a biomass fuel produced by fermenting biomass containing sugars, either from sugar cane and other food crops such as artichokes or from wood chips, waste straw, or sawdust, from which ethanol is then distilled. Compared to fossil fuels, bioethanol produces relatively little carbon dioxide when burned, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, bioethanol is currently the most widely used renewable energy source in the world.
