Introduction to Anaerobic Degradation Technology

Anaerobic degradation, also known as anaerobic digestion, is a biological process where microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen. This process yields a biogas rich in methane, which can be used as a renewable energy source, and a nutrient-rich digestate, suitable for use as a fertilizer or soil amendment.

We leverage cutting-edge ADT to process a wide range of organic waste streams, including:

  • Food waste: From households, restaurants, and food processing industries.
  • Agricultural residues: Crop residues, manure, and livestock waste.
  • Industrial byproducts: Wine lees, brewery waste, and distillery residues.
  • Municipal organic waste: Collected from households and businesses.
  • By converting these waste streams into valuable products, we help our clients reduce their environmental footprint, generate revenue, and achieve their sustainability goals.

The Science Behind Anaerobic Degradation

Anaerobic digestion is a complex biochemical process involving a consortium of microorganisms working in synergy. The process can be broadly divided into four stages:

  • Hydrolysis: Complex organic polymers like carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids are broken down into simpler soluble molecules by hydrolytic enzymes secreted by bacteria.
  • Acidogenesis:  Acidogenic bacteria ferment the soluble molecules produced in hydrolysis, generating volatile fatty acids (VFAs), alcohols, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.
  • Acetogenesis: Acetogenic bacteria convert the VFAs and alcohols into acetic acid, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide.
  • Methanogenesis: Methanogenic archaea, the key players in anaerobic digestion, convert acetic acid and hydrogen into methane and carbon dioxide. Methane, the primary component of biogas, is a valuable energy source.

Key Features and Advantages of Anaerobic Degradation Technology

  • Versatility: Our technology can handle a wide variety of organic waste streams, offering flexible solutions for different industries and municipalities.
  • Efficiency: We optimize the anaerobic digestion process to maximize biogas production and digestate quality.
  • Sustainability: ADT significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by diverting organic waste from landfills and producing renewable energy.
  • Economic Viability: By generating valuable products like biogas and digestate, our solutions offer attractive economic returns for our clients.
  • Environmental Responsibility: We adhere to the highest environmental standards in our operations, ensuring responsible waste management.

Technical Classification

We offer a range of anaerobic digestion systems tailored to specific client needs and waste characteristics:

  • Wet Digestion: Suitable for substrates with high moisture content, such as food waste and slurry.
  • Dry Digestion: Ideal for substrates with lower moisture content, like agricultural residues and solid organic waste.
  • Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR): Provides continuous mixing and uniform substrate distribution, ensuring efficient digestion.
  • Plug Flow Reactor: Offers a simpler design with lower energy consumption, suitable for certain waste streams.
  • Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR): Combines anaerobic digestion with membrane filtration for enhanced digestate quality and water recovery.

Applications of Anaerobic Degradation Technology

  • Agriculture: Processing manure and agricultural residues to generate biogas for on-farm energy needs and nutrient-rich digestate for fertilizer.
  • Food Industry: Treating food waste from processing plants, restaurants, and supermarkets to reduce waste disposal costs and generate renewable energy.
  • Municipalities: Managing organic waste from households and businesses to reduce landfill burden and generate biogas for electricity production.
  • Industrial Sector: Treating wastewater and organic byproducts from breweries, distilleries, and other industries to recover resources and reduce pollution..

Environmental Benefits

  • Greenhouse Gas Reduction: Prevents methane emissions from landfills, a potent greenhouse gas, and reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Waste Diversion: Diverts organic waste from landfills, extending landfill lifespan and reducing environmental impact.
  • Nutrient Recycling: Produces nutrient-rich digestate, a valuable fertilizer that reduces reliance on synthetic fertilizers and promotes sustainable agriculture.
  • Odor Control: Effectively manages odors associated with organic waste decomposition.
  • Water Conservation: Enables water recovery from digestate, promoting water conservation.
